Whenever the artists from Mongolian Step perform, people suddenly begin asking about visiting Mongolia. It seems that our artists and their work make people want to learn more about the country and its unique landscape and culture, and even to experience it first-hand: sleeping on the steppe under starry skies, drinking kumis in a yurt, getting to know Mongolian hospitality, participating in our colourful festivals and enjoying the diverse cultural offerings found in Mongolia’s cities.

This has naturally led to the idea of including travel in our repertoire of services, in keeping with our motto: Better to see once with your own eyes than to hear a thousand times from others.

We therefore want to use our website and blog to answer any questions you might have about travelling to Mongolia. In addition, we will be presenting select travel agencies and tours, and sharing valuable tips.

The Chinggis Khaan Hotel – A Part of Mongolian History

Ever since I launched my agency, Mongolian Step, I have often been asked about Mongolia as a holiday destination. That is why I would like to begin using my blog to talk about all the things Mongolia offers travellers – with tips on where to stay, how to get there, which sights to visit and which activities to enjoy. The latter naturally includes cultural events in my homeland.

I would like to start this series of posts by presenting the Chinggis Khaan Hotel. It’s an establishment with a fascinating past: its construction turned into quite an adventure for the owners, including a journey by horse-drawn carriage through a country undergoing major upheaval. And its first guest was the Dalai Lama. If walls could talk, this venerable abode would have much to tell. The Chinggis is one of the first hotels in Ulaanbaatar built to Western standards, among other unique aspects. To learn more about its background, I met with the hotel’s director, Otgontuya Khorloo. Our very interesting chat made it clear that the Chinggis is much more than just a place for getting some sleep.
